The Bavarian Catholic Hospital, Okigwe, Nigeria
The Bavaria Catholic Specialist Hospital is one of the Catholic assets that constitute the Mary Hill Catholic Centre Okigwe. The hospital is relatively new since it only started on 10th December 2016. The hospital is located in a rural area just outside Okigwe, in the South East of Nigeria. Apart from the hospital the catholic community also has a Retreat Centre, schools and a Bishop’s court in the outskirts of the city.
The hospital wants to deliver top-notch medical care to the region and to be known for its medical excellence and trusted by patients. The hospital currently has the following departments:
- General Surgery
- Intensive Care
- Antenatal and Maternal Care
- Fully Equipped Lab
Autonomous Power System
The three complexes with blocks of buildings: the hospital, the retreat centre and the bishop’s court use 5814 kWh electricity, daily. The electricity consumption consists of scanning and X-ray departments, surgery, fridges and freezers, lighting, air conditioners and fans, heaters, televisions etc.
At the moment all the electricity is provided by diesel generators and a limited number of solar panels. Diesel is a very expensive source of electricity. The costs depend on the quality of the generator and of the diesel, the diesel price and the standby time. Apart from the costs diesel also has a negative impact on the environment locally and to the climate.
Since the hospital needs reliable electricity during day and night to deliver top-notch medical care to the region a better alternative was found.
Currently, the hospital is a 70 bedded facility, the retreat centre is a 148 rooms lodging/reception complex and the Bishop’s court having buildings for accommodation, schools, offices and reception halls. Yearly, a total of 2,6 GWh electricity is used. The diesel costs to generate this power are € 870.000.
The autonomous power system will add solar panels and batteries to the premises to generate 2,7 GWh yearly.
